I am a firm believer in you get what you pay for, but at the same time have always been a little skeptical of expensive espresso machines. I had an old DeLonghi which I was happy with, but once I tried this one, I didn’t know what I was missing. The DelLonghi EC155 is one of the best budget machines you can buy.

Good points:

  • Convenience of a fast heat-up time (only about a minute), good frothing wand, and no wait time between frothing and brewing
  • As good or better than anything you’ll get at a restaurant
  • E.S.E (easy serve espresso) – meaning you can pick up the ESE pods for a good online pod retailer and therefore don’t have to go to the trouble of grinding and tamping.
  • Looks good on the counter and more importantly, doesn’t take up too much room
  • Pump driven – much better than steam driven
  • Large removable tank which is also a good size – you can make about 8-10 shots before you need to refill it.

Bad Points:

  • Frothing wand is only 3 1/4 inches from the counter top. Not such an issue as you can buy a frothing cup that is about that height which solved the problem
  • You will drink a lot more coffee than you used to and will find your friends randomly popping round for coffee
