The brews are strong, but not bitter – an rare achievement of other coffee machines.

2. When you first get it home, experiment with the grind, and amount of coffee. I found that a grind half-way between drip and espresso is perfect. I use only half the amount of coffee per cup I would with drip, and get a richer cup. The Moka brew is not cheap, but because I use less coffee it will pay for itself the first year.
3. You cannot get filters except by phone through Krups. However, I have found that using 2 standard 3.5″ disk filters (cheap at any major supermarket) and offsetting them slightly so they cover the 3.75″ in basket, you can get perfect coffee with no grinds slipping into the brew.

Krups is a long trusted brand and for good reason. This Krups XP4030 represents the newest European designs yet maintains the rigorous and clearly functional characteristics synonymous with Krups products.

Specifically designed for easy operation, the Krups XP4030 is a 15 bar pump espresso machine. It claims to be “fool proof”, however we would not agree with this declaration. It can be a little tricky at times but is equipped with a patented “Perfect Froth System” which makes the process of steaming and frothing milk for cappuccino or latte simple. It has a high convenience filter holder that has 3 different settings: 1 for 1 serving, 2 for 2 servings of espresso, and 3 for ESE Pods, so you can have the best of both worlds as you can choose between ground coffee or pods. The auto cappuccino system also precisely combines the right amount of steam and air to easily froth milk, and it is best to use cold milk for the ideal froth.

But really, for the money, this Krups XP4030 pump is totally worth it.

The best feature of this Capresso 441.05 MT-500 Plus 10-cup Coffeemaker is that it is FAST! It can brew up to 10 cups in under eight minutes and the carafe then keeps the coffee hot for several hours. All-in-all, this is a great machine and we feel very comfortable recommending it. It is a little on the pricey side, but we feel it is actually worth the bit of extra money – that is, of course, a very individual decision.

Another great feature of this Capresso 441.05 MT-500 Plus 10-cup Coffeemaker is that the carafe prevents coffee from turning bitter, as it can when sitting on a warming plate, and doesn’t have to remain with the machine for coffee to stay hot. The machine also offers a setting for brewing three to five cups without diluting the flavor or aroma. The unit’s charcoal water filter removes up to 83 percent of the chlorine in tap water, and its electronic indicator shows when the water filter needs replacing. To reduce calcification, Capresso’s stainless-steel ThermoBlock system prevents water from contacting aluminum inside the machine.

All in all, we rate this Saeco 641 Odea Go Super Automatic Espresso Machine well. But, it has mixed opinions.

This Saeco 641 Odea Go Super Automatic Espresso Machine does everything it should; grinds, doses, tamps, brews, and dispenses quality espresso, and even prepares one to two cups at the same time. The espresso machine’s pre-brewing cycle maximizes flavor extraction, while its Pannarello frothing device produces steam in three different directions for cappuccinos and lattes, dispenses hot water for making hot beverages and soups, and can be completely removed for cleaning.

Other features of the Saeco 641 Odea Super Automatic Espresso Machine include:

• a 1-1/2-liter removable water tank;
• an Aqua Prima water filter that removes impurities from the water and protects the machine from limescale damage;
• a drip tray that can be raised or lowered manually or electrically with a simple touch, which means it easily accommodates different cup sizes such as espresso cups or glasses; and
• a removable Saeco brew group for easy, chemical-free cleaning.

You will need the following items to make a good espresso at home using an espresso machine

* good espresso machine – the DeLonghi EC155 is a good one but there are many options out there.
* good quality beans which are fresh (if you don’t want to grind your own beans, you can buy them ground already – but for pure freshness, I recommend grinding your own)
* grinder (optional)
* tamper
* filtered water

7 steps to making the perfect espresso

Making the perfect espresso is more of an art, than a science. Practice makes perfect, but by following these 7 steps, you will be well on the way to making the perfect espresso….

1. Research which coffee beans you like the best. Believe it or not, the tastes of different coffee beans can vary greatly due to the different types of roasts that are out there.
2. Grind your own beans. Like most things, quality equipment usually means a quality end product – so do not buy a cheap grinder as they can ruin your coffee. The consistency of the coffee should be like sugar – if it is too fine, then the brew takes too long to brew, resulting in burnt coffee. YUK!
3. Use the correct amount of coffee – 7 grams is advised for a single shot.
4. Pack the grind into the filter holder and lightly press using a tamper (you want the coffee evenly packed). A tamper is used to pack the grinds to a density that will provide the right amount of resistance against the water going through the grind.
5. Tightly lock the filter handle in the machine and place a warm up underneath it.
6. Use filtered water that is not boiling!! Fill the espresso machine with filtered cold water – the espresso machine will heat the water to the correct temperature.
7. Start the machine. If your machine is automatic, it will switch off at the perfect time, however, if your machine is manually run, then this is the important step. The key is knowing when to stop the machine from running. It should take about 5 seconds for the first drops of coffee to come out, but about 25 seconds (depending on the machine) to make a single serve. The coffee should drip out slowly, appear reddish brown in colour with a thick crema. If the crema is starting to appear clear (as it is coming out of the machine), stop the machine immediately. Your coffee has finished brewing.

That’s all!

If you like your coffee black, simply add hot water to your espresso shot. Alternatively, if you like your coffee with milk, simply add milk that has been warmed with a frother.

Most importantly, once your coffee has been brewed, for the best flavor, you must drink it immediately.
